This masked cardinal was observed as part of a pair perching on a barbed wire fence along the edge of a forest patch near a pond. An unmistakable and striking bird, it is easily detected with the naked eye thanks to the bright red head and throat. This species gets its common name from the thick black mask that wraps around the sides of the head.
